| Moyra Jones, owner/designer of burgeoning printed textile business, Surface Art, originally hales from Scotland. It was at college in Scotland, that she garnered the knowledge and expertise to turn her love of textiles and good design into a flourishing business. In 1989, Moyra moved to Australia and worked for a well-known Australian artist, translating his artworks into unique designs for clothing and home wares. It was here that she honed her production skills and gained an understanding of the Australian marketplace.
In 2002, Surface Art was borne. In the early days, Moyra, set up at the Paddington, Bondi and Rocks markets. She rapidly gained a loyal following for her bold original printed cushions and signature A-line skirts. Stylists were quick to pick up her strong, lively designs for interior shoots and those with a keen eye for quality original garments started to collect her pieces. In 2009, Surface Art offers a studio shop in Annandale but is primarily an online and wholesale business with stockists throughout Australia, as well as in New Zealand and the UK. Surface Art now employs a small staff to assist in overseeing production, marketing and fulfilment and calls on the talents of Australian printers and manufacturers. Moyra’s influences are Japanese art, European design and the bold creations of the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s. She embraces colour, shape, balance and simplicity. The Surface Art look puts a contemporary spin on timeless design. Surface Art is now synonymous with stylish fabrics that are designed, printed and fashioned into quality garments and home wares right here in Australia. The fabrics are produced in limited runs; Surface Art offers an antidote to chain store fashions and the large home wares franchises. |
